Q&A, Common Problems

I connected a Basler IP camera to my PC and powered on the camera. But when I use the Basler BIP Finder software, the camera is not listed. What could be wrong?

The Basler BIP Finder finds my camera, but I can't open the camera with my web browser. Why not?

How can I check to see if my IP Camera has the latest firmware, and how do I do a firmware update?

There are several common reasons why IP camera discovery using Basler's BIP Finder software program might fail:

1.
A Firewall is active.

If your PC is using a firewall, turn it off.

2.
You have multiple network interface cards (NICs) in your PC and they are in the same subnet.

Make sure that all of the NICs in your PC (even wireless NICs) are configured for different subnets. For example:

NIC 1: Automatic IP address
NIC 2: 192.168.0.110 / 255.255.255.0
NIC 3: 192.168.1.110 / 255.255.255.0
etc.

Please note that if you have set a NIC in your PC to use an auto IP address and there is no DHCP server on your network, the NIC will get an IP address in the 169.254.xxx.xxx range with a 255.255.0.0 subnet mask. Make sure that any other NICs in your computer are set so that they do not have a configuration in the same subnet.

3.
The Windows® operating system added an incorrect route to your camera.

On your PC, disable all of the NICs that the camera is NOT connected to (even wireless NICs). Now try to find the camera again with the BIP Finder software. Once the BIP Finder finds your camera, the operating system will automatically correct the route. You can now enable the other NICs again.

4.
Filter drivers (for example, VPN software) are installed on the NIC to which the camera is connected.

Disable all filter drivers that may interfere with an IP camera's communication. In fact, the only thing that a camera needs to communicate successfully is "internet protocol (TCP/IP)".

There are two common reasons why this happens:

1. The camera is connected to a network interface card (NIC) in your PC and the NIC's configuration does not match the camera's configuration.

Make sure that the NIC to which the camera is connected is set for a network configuration that matches the camera's network configuration. The BIP Finder software (version 1.2 or newer) displays the camera's configuration in a popup window. Make sure that the NIC and the camera are in the same subnet.

If you want to access the camera via its auto IP address (i.e., the address in the 169.254.XXX.XXX address range with the 255.255.0.0 subnet mask), you should configure your NIC to use auto IP addressing.

2. The web browser is configured to use a proxy server.

If your network includes a proxy server and your web browser is configured to use the proxy server, the browser will not be able to access the camera. To avoid this problem, change your web browser's network connection settings so that the proxy server will not be used with local addresses.

Occasionally, firmware updates may be made available for cameras in the field. To determine the version of the firmware currently in your camera, start your web browser and access your camera with the Basler Surveillance Web Client. In the web client, expand the System parameters group, and click on the Info tab. The Info tab will have an entry that indicates the current version of the firmware in the camera.

Now, check the Firmware Download section of the IP Camera website to see if a newer version of firmware is available. If newer firmware is available, download it to your computer. Note that the firmware is different for each camera model, so be sure to download the correct firmware for your model.
